Context Cards

Context Cards: Context cards are everything learning should be--student-driven, student-centered, student-created. As you are previewing the unit or the text, identify individual things that students will need to know in order to properly contextualize what they're reading. Here are some examples:
  • Biblical allusions
  • Mythological allusions
  • Pop culture allusions
  • Historical references or events
  • Historical figures
  • Idioms
  • Archetypal characters
You will assign each student one thing to learn about (i.e., if there is a reference to Judas in a text, assign a student Judas). That student will create enough context cards for everyone in the class and do a presentation on his or her assigned thing. Students will collect the cards and can use them as they read and on tests, if you allow it. The only downside to this project is that your students will start seeing allusions everywhere and blame you for it.
